Rules and Paintings

Admittedly, I am not a very good rule follower. Laws, yes, rules…..well, I think that sometimes they are made to be bent and molded! 🙂 Anyhoo, I saw this fun “rule of thirds” tutorial on a fun new blog , and decided to give it a shot. (If you want to learn more about the rule of thirds, click the button below). I actually have a huge fear of messing up the rule of thirds, which I know is ridiculous. Part of that is because when I first bought my big girl Nikon, I posted a couple of photos to Flickr, and someone commented and mentioned they didn’t follow the rule of thirds. That comment was actually helpful, but made me a bit paranoid now. So, I hope everyone will be somewhat kind, and humor me. Hehe.

The cross and sun flare follow the rule of thirds really well here…..but, it is God, ’nuff said?

This photo of Haley fits the rule, and it is great to see her laughing at her goofy sister who is entertaining her to the right over there.

Here’s the goofy sister, at a different time of course, and this one’s tricky on the rule, but it seemed right to my eye, so I am calling it good. 😉

Now here’s where my paranoia about the rule of thirds comes in, with this next picture, which is one of my recent faves. I’m not positive whether it follows the rule or not. I think so, my eye says so….but….geez, this is like a math test! The #1 thing I love about this picture? Her eyes look like they came out of a Vermeer painting like this one: “The Girl With The Pearl Earring,” and Vermeer was CLEARLY following the rule of thirds; that and the rule of earth shatteringly beautiful painting.

So…look up some more gorgeous Vermeer and the rule of thirds; definitely click the button below to see some photos that unquestionably are following the rule of thirds, and of course have a beautiful weekend, friends! ❤

Thanks so much for linking in to Exploring with a Camera! These are great examples, I especially love the first one – fantastic image. I hope you are getting over your fear of breaking the rule of thirds – it’s a rule that was meant to be broken!

  2. I’m not a very good rule follower either! 🙂 Beautiful photo with the sun shining through the cross!! 🙂
